About Respiratory Therapy Program (RT)

Program History

The Undergraduate Respiratory Therapy Program at King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences (Al Ahsa-branch) was established in August 2015 under the umbrella of College of Applied Medical Sciences. The program accepts both male and female students. The program curriculum is adapted from the University of South Alabama in the United States, with the necessary modifications to meet the needs of the university and Saudi society.

The Bachelor of Science degree program in Respiratory Therapy provides students with an exceptional education to prepare for a rewarding professional career as advanced Respiratory Therapy practitioners, as well as to provide a foundation for leadership in management and supervision, education, research, and clinical specialization.

This program prepares students to provide professional respiratory care in health care settings ranging from the emergency room to the patient’s home. The program provides the necessary knowledge and skills to begin clinical practice and promotes continual career growth.

A Respiratory Therapist is a member of the health care team who takes care of patients with respiratory problems by participating in diagnosing and managing specific patient cases. Moreover, the respiratory therapist is involved in prevention and health promotion programs for individuals and society.


The mission of the Respiratory Care program at KSAU-HS is to offer an excellent learning environment that fosters critical thinking and qualifies self-sufficient graduates who will serve the community in the KSA, take the responsibility for their learning, and have good problem-solving skills. The program promotes self-development, encourages professional leadership, and promotes strong appreciation of ethical values. In addition, the program emphasizes the quality of patient care and provides students with opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary for their profession.

The KSAU-HS enjoys the opportunity and significant advantage of being associated with the King Abdulaziz Medical City for students’ clinical practice. King Abdulaziz Medical City is a tertiary hospital with a capacity of 1,300 beds and has highly qualified staff with high-tech equipment, doing procedures and surgeries, and thus providing students with an excellent environment for clinical practice and gaining experience.
